5 alternatives to Limewire

By Nick Mead on 27 October, 2010

LimeWire, the popular Gnutella based P2P program for Mac and Windows, has ceased operations. Torrentfreak reports that a US judge has granted a request from the Recording Industry Artists of America (RIAA) to disable all features of the program that allow users to share copyrighted material. LimeWire has issued a statement on its site. They have also issued a link to a PDF file of the 17 page injunction. Torrentfreak reports that although this is the end of LimeWire in its current form, it is expected to reappear with a "non-infringing" service.

We don't condone illegal file sharing. But for legitimate use, there are other P2P apps around:

uTorrent

Owned by BitTorrent, uTorrent for Mac and Windows is one of the most popular BitTorrent clients out there for several reasons: it's fast, lightweight, easy to use and very efficient.

FrostWire

Frostwire for Mac and Windows is a hidden gem among Peer to Peer (P2P) applications. It's built on the same Gnutella code as Limewire but free of any advertising. Frostwire is one of the most accessible and reliable P2P applications you will find, and it doesn’t annoy you with pop ups or ads asking you to buy stuff.

Ares

Ares is a successful P2P based application also based on the Gnutella network that will give you free, direct access to a huge community. It was spun-off from Gnutella in 2002, and since then has been building a strong and dedicated base of users.

Shareaza

Shareaza started out life as the legendary Gnutella network but today is one of the eMaul's strongest competitors. Shareaza is a completely free peer to peer (P2P) system. The program features Multi-Network Support which means it can connect up to 4 separate Peer-to-Peer networks.

Songr

Songr is a simple tool which isn't a P2P client, but does allow you to listen to your favorite music. Songr uses ten different MP3 search engines at the moment, although you can't select which ones to use and that makes results quite variable, depending on what you're looking for.

Bearshare IS rubbish. I was unfortunate enough to download it a while back and it changed my search engine to come up with crap suggestions whenever I typed something on it (No thanks bearshare, I do not want to see someones privates), added some stupid music toolbar to firefox (which wouldn't leave even after uninstalling it) and well...lets not get started on the actual program itself. I miss Limewire too...

I miss limewire too! I had it for years and never had much of a problem with downloads, why can't they just make a disclosure on limewire where you get a trial and then you have the choice to pay a fee either monthly or yearly? Man I miss them it has been hell trying to find another mac compatible site for music besides itunes....

I just lost all music, 10 years, thanks to advice from apple techs. If anyone out there can send me a 'Dylan tune or 1000?" Neil Young? John Lennon? African harmonies?, NZ Mauri's, Taj Mahal, Regge, Samanilla dub, Paul Kelly, Don't know how to share but I'm on empty and just joined "Icewire" last night but havne't figured it out yet. Used Lime Wire for years, it has been done before so it can BE DONE & SHOULD BE DONE AGAIN & EVEN BETTER! It used to take ships off shore but where there's a will there's a way, nut I'm not educated in HOW?

Shareaza was a nightmare!!...It hijacked my computer... it installed a toolbar automatically...it did what ever it wanted to do and erased my homepage completely. It was a bitch to get rid of!!...you have no idea!!!...it froze my computer...and I couldn't even get to the music!!...it was all about movies!! It took 3 days to get rid of it...it was hidden everywhere in my computer and I had to go to a date before I installed Shareaza and reinstall my data to rescue my computer!! P.S. My Best Friend installed BareShare and it did exactly the same thing!!...So BE CAREFUL Folks!!!
