Add a background image to Google

By Elena Santos on 4 June, 2010

After finally implementing a tool to rename folders in Google Reader (what took them so long?!), Google has also introduced a new feature: the option to customize the background image in the Google homepage.

Add a background image to Google

The feature is being slowly rolled out, so don't worry if you don't see it yet. For those who already have it enabled, you should see a Change background image link in the bottom left corner of Google's homepage.

Add a background image to Google

Clicking this link brings up Google's background image menu, with four options: using an image saved on your computer, using an image from your Picasa Web Albums, selecting a wallpaper from public photos featured in Piacasa Web Albums or selecting it from a set of Google recommended wallpapers.

Add a background image to Google

Images you use as Google background must be at least 800x600, preferably in landscape orientation - that is, wider than taller. Several formats are supported, including JPG, BMP, GIF, PSD and even some selected RAW formats. Also, you'll need one of the following browsers: Google Chrome, Internet Explorer 7 or later, Firefox 3.x and Safari 3 or later. When you want to change the image, or you feel like going back to Google's original minimalist design, simply click the Remove background image link at the bottom of the page.

Hi Elena, I tried this new feature and the result was really good, especially the editor's picks ( or pics ) What's odd is that you have to stay signed in to be able to see the picture. As soon as I sign in to my account it takes me direcly to my emails, which means I can no longer see the google home page. Am I doing something wrong? Best regards

Hey GeorgeIbiza! Yeah, you have to stay signed in to see the picture. I tried signing out and in again, and I'm taken to the Google homepage (not email, as you said) so maybe there's something in your Google settings that tells the system to point you directly to your inbox. Don't you like the images? Some of them look really gorgeous :) Cheers!

Hi Elena, Thanks , you are right. When I go to the Internet my homepage is Google and when I sign in, it takes me directly to my Gmail....what I wanted to suggest was to apply the wallpaper in Google settings instead of having to sign in. I really did like the images, especially the editor's selection. Best regards

HI, I am one of those who do not want a background image of any kind, just a simple plain page where I fill in the search details. However when I choose the change picture option at the bottom left hand side, I am not being given any choice at all, why? If I am unable to reset the page, I no longer use google.

Hey Tamx, that's weird! You should see a "Remove background image" link at the bottom left corner of your Google homepage. That takes you back to Google's classic white interface, with a link to add a new background image if you want to. I just tried it now and it works for me... Anyway, if you use Firefox as web browser, you can always use the built-in Google search field. Cheers!
