Easily split and join large files with HJSplit

By Tom Clarke on 5 June, 2008

HJ-SplitSince time immemorial, computer users have had problems sharing large files. Whether trying to fit Sim City on floppy disks, uploading binaries to newsgroups or sharing home movies via email, you may well have suffered the inconvenience of a file that's just too big for what you're trying to do.

This is where HJSplit comes in. It's a remarkably simple and easy-to-use little application which can split any file you like into parts of a predefined size, so that sharing them or storing them is made easier. It can also join split files back together and compare parts to see if they're the same.

Based in just one small executable (there's no installer for this old school app!), the utility weighs in at a piffling 300kb and doesn't have the world's best design. But it works surprisingly well and splits files into chunks of your chosen size, very quickly indeed. Its joining, comparing and MD5 tools all work just as efficiently. A small but very effective little utility which will split and rejoin any file you like.

HI, I have a trouble, because I tried to join 6 files in one subdirectory, named something.avi.001 to .006. A new file something.avi emerged, of the size approximately of all six, but, when I opened it, only first part of the movie was played. Coula you help me? Yours Ivan

I just downloaded HJsplit. I also downloaded a file that I wanted to use HJ Split to join. When I try to open this file (.AVI) Windows says it can't open using the player. Am I doing something wrong or not doing something? All I have done is downloaded the file and joined. Thanks, Jerod

Hi I got the HJslipt and it works...there is just one problem. The new avi file keeps shaking and doesnt seem to get fixed. I tried doing it a few times but it still gives the same result. The quality is good but throughout the clip, it skips ( bounces, beats) like a heart . Any tips?

I have problems understanding how HJsplit works, there is really no instructions. Could someone explain step by step, in layman terms how to join the files together? TY. Marty

For me, it only seems to find files labeled wmv.001 or avi.002, it never finds the .002 and so on extensions. Can anyone help with this?

While joining, it can't just find any file to join although, the files required, actually exist in the same directory. It sucks.

HJ Split finds and then "joins" the .001 file only. It never finds the other parts, so it never joins them to the .001 file (which is the entire purpose of using the program). I'm not very savvy with multiple files, but it does look like I'm using the program correctly. Either the program or I aren't working correctly. I'm going to download the file again, but I doubt it will make any difference because I see others have had this same problem.

@Irritated - The program always works very well for me. Are you receiving any error messages?
