I've had a few good years with Firefox, but I disagree with Nick that we should stick with it. Progress never stops, and it's become impossible to ignore how much Opera, Safari and especially Chrome have improved. It's time to dump Firefox, and here's why:

1: Memory usage
Sure, there are thousands of neat add-ons for Firefox, but install a few and after a while you'll see its memory use rocket. I have often discovered Firefox eating a gigabyte of memory after a few hours at work, which is just unreasonable. I have found Opera and Google are much lighter on resources over a day in the office.
2: Looks
I know there is beauty on the inside, but why not have it outside too? When it comes to your browser, you don't need to compromise with attractiveness. Firefox has been leapfrogged by everyone when it comes to looking great - even the dreaded Internet Explorer is looking better these days.
3: Out-dated features
Have you seen the downloader in Chrome? Firefox will just seem inadequate once you have. Firefox extensions? You have to restart the browser to install. Those are just two of the Mozilla browser's out-of-date features. Try Opera if you want to see a truly modern feature set. What's more, the Firefox interface takes up more room than is necessary - changing browser will give you more browsing real estate to play with.
4: Stability
Firefox crashes every day for me. I discovered that with Chrome, each tab is a separate process and so you can isolate and kill the problem without losing all of your open tabs. That's much better, and minimizes your chances of losing work.
5: Familiarity isn't good
A fact of computing is rapid change - don't let comfortable familiarity keep you from moving with the times or you may find yourself too far behind to catch up. Just because a feature works differently doesn't mean it doesn't work at all! Familiarity is what keeps IE 6 and 7 in the browser charts. Safari, Chrome and Opera all do things in their own ways, but they are all great browsers and you're missing out if you don't give them a chance!

FIREFOX ROCKS NO MATTER WHAT THESE LAME REASONS TROLL TALKS ABOUT..WILL BE AND HAS BEEN MY BROWSER CHOICE SINCE IT INCEPTION ..THE REST ARE WANNABES ..PERIOD........
Agreed, that FF consumes a bit more RAM than the others but it is a small price to pay for all the other awesome stuff the browser offers. You can make FF to whatever/however you want it to be. As long as there is another browser with such deep levels of customization is available I wouldn't think of changing my FF. FF crashes everyday? Stay up-to-date with plugins. Don't install unverified add-ons. My FF is extremely stable. In fact, I can't remember the last time it crashed. Bottom line: With proper usage, FF is God.
This is ridiculous... none of the points made have any validity. Chrome uses more memory with multi-process. Firefox looks better than Chrome in my opinion (and this point is almost entirely opinion). Firefox has more features than chrome... chrome is minimalistic... and what Firefox doesn't have by default there are addons for. Firefox is super stable for me... Chrome has frozen up more than firefox for me... although that may be flash's fault. Familiarity is good... and if you change away from Firefox... whatever you change to will be familiar... and thus bad? Ridiculous.
What features of Firefox would you miss? Chrome and Opera started much later with extensions, but I'm pretty sure most things are covered now. Opera does more 'out of the box' than Firefox already.
IF you ever want to establish credibility, stop making arbitrary conclusions not supported by facts. In your case, it's not even supported by plain logic. Thumbs down.
@Arnjolt, what are you talking about? Chrome's way better than Firefox, for all of the factual reasons listed above. Why don't you try to logically critique them instead of making vague accusations?
The best thing?PALEMOON,Firefox optimized browser for Windows users. It's exactly same as FF(graphics,stability,add-ons)but no accessibility features and no Parental Control, that makes FF a lot more "heavy" amd slow(of course if you need that features continue to use FF). Try Pale Moon, and you will get all the best of Firefox(25% faster),and ONLY the best.
But why does firefox always tells me it has developed a problem and wants to close everytime I visit my mailbox to read mails?
firefox has never given me any problems. my internet explorer crashed every day so I uninstalled it and I have been using firefox ever since without any problems
yu cant uninstall internet explorer in xp windows xp as for having safari idk how good its security is chrome has bad adblocks i should know cause i tried their adblock plus didnt do a thing so idk which one is good really
No, I dont agree with author, I strongly recommend firefox, Its all in one with best tweaks and user friendly and optimised for all windows. looks good and works best comparing with any other browser.. I am using windows 7 and opera and chrome only taking much space than firefox, I am using firefox after checking number of browsers like saffari, opera, chrome. It was very stable and never crashed, only one draw back in firefox is you have to restart the browser when new add-ons installed, but i think it is quite ignorable, But ultimately you will have great browsing experience, Opera also somewhat better but google chrome is just a shit, cannot be compared with forefox.
Firefox is no longer called a perfect browser! its problems are not hidden! i just wanna suggest everyone that if you dont like firefox like me. just try Google Chrome. its going with great speed, facilities, looks etc. hope you liked my suggestions and will like chrome. THANKYOU!
In protest to your statements. (1) Like others have said before, Chrome uses a separate process for each addon and tab. Since I love addons,(I currently have over 30 installed) that amounts to unheard memory amounts. (2) I must admit, the Firefox 3.6 default theme looks very plain compared to the modern browsers. But in Firefox 4 the developers have updated the default theme with an aero interface(basically like Chrome). Of course, there are 100's of themes that you can install. Plus, Firefox theme developers are able to change the entire visual element of the Firefox browser(buttons, tabs, menus, etc.) Chrome on the other hand has themes like firefox personas, which change only the background. (3) Firefox 4 has updated many things that you have mentioned. Also, the addons are slowly going restartless. If you don't like basically any part of the Firefox interface, an addon can change that.(Like the download manager) (4) When I saw this statement I was flabbergasted. Crashes every day? You must be using either a), an outdated version of Firefox, or b) something is wrong with your computer. In recent memory, Firefox has crashed once in the last 3 months for me. (I am using 35 addons) (5) Sorry, but I can't wrap my mind around this statement....:P (As you can tell, I'm a Firefox fanboy, but for good reason:)
There is only one problem with Chrome. It's part of Google, an organization that I would trust to look after my interests, and web security even less than Microsoft. So for me it's No 1: Safari, 2:Firefox, and 3: IE9, and many others before I would even think about using any Google service.
To me FIREFOX is a piece of shit...so is OPERA..I'm in low rate connection and to me the browsers that really works are:IRON SOFTWARE/KAMELEON with some incomprehensiv bugs though,SAFARI somedays LUNASCAPE and FLASH PEAK SLIMBROWSER...Iwanted to download CHROME but it takes ages to...so fuck off..Fuck off IE7/8/9 as well!! though SLIMBROWSER seems a pluggin of... After havin' read that article i'm gonna kick out that FIREFOX out of my sight (took 3 hours yesterday for the upload)
google is the fastes browser much faster then firefox, never mind the toolbars the apps working fine, beside no crash at all by google chrome. a fantastic browser!!
I am the regular user of FF but for some time I am also experiencing the frequent crashes followed by apologies but I am not sure as which other browser is compatible to FF which has a lot of useful features. Could anybody advise me on this?
FIREFOX IS GREAT IT EVEN WORKS BETTER AND ALL THE ABOVE.
I have had the ram issues with FF 3 & 4.0 Beta 11,also the freezes & crashes. Chrome has been a bit better on the freezes and crashes BUT still prefer FF overall for downloads and layout.
I have used Firefox since it's conception and I only use Opera as a backup browser as for chrome it annoys the living daylight out of me and no matter how hard I try I can't get comfortable using it, and I wouldn't use IE if it was the only browser on earth, why because it a Windows browser and I don't use Windows (YUK) I also use Firefox because it's open source and those others are not long live Free Open Source Software. If you have trouble with Firefox crashing, You may have a problem with your Operating system or hardware or something not Firefox because it never crashes on me.
o matter if the world is updated everyday but still firefox is the BEST!!!!!!!!
I have chrome on the laptop and mozilla on the desktop. When I play Farmville on Mozilla, it uses up my HughesNet daily allowance much faster than when I play using Chrome. I like them both alright, but does anyone know why Mozilla eats up the mb so fast? I don't add add-ons, maybe they just add themselves automatically.
hi loveeeeeeeee is our prommise
Firefox is not really a bad browser since you can customize it any way you want. So what if you have to restart Firefox to start a new add-in. It like saying that you hate some software because the installer asks you to restart your computer. Safari Is the worse since you can't block cookies and all of their extensions are either Facebook blockers and stuff like that and no ad blocker, plus it's really slow. Firefox doesn't consume anymore than 100MB of ram, and that is including the 20ish add-ins and the themes that I use. If you like a good browser go with either Chrome, Firefox, Opera, or Internet Explorer.
thank you so much for writing this! i've never understood people's obsession with firefox... sure it's a cute little thing and a good alternative to IE but in terms of usability... whenever i have to use it, i have to look for, install addons and configure for an hour or so to get all the features opera already comes with. and when i had to use firefox at work, i had to monitor memory usage very closely because it would eat up memory damn quickly which is not a good idea if your work involves memory intense programs. also, in terms of speed there was at least quite a while where all the sites i have tested myself would load either about equally fast in opera or faster. considering the usability and memory issues, firefox would have to be a lot faster - but it isn't. or maybe temporarily but come on... i don't have the nerve to benchmark browsers every month or two.
although i btw have to say that i didn't care for a lot of the changes since roughly opera 8 (or maybe 9, can't remember) either. and have refused to upgrade beyond early 10. but using opera/firefox/ie8 regularly (some more, some less), i still find opera most comfortable.
My Firefox didn't crash from months I don't know why your are crashing every day! and about FF looking for me I use My own theme thanx for Personalize feature . I agree about memory usage but it now better then before any way I never have issue with memory because I have 4Gb on my PC. and about other browses lets start with Opera 1st it's slower and more important for me as web designer Opera still have few bugs with HTML and CSS even with latest version of Opera. and about chrome .1st chrome are in same speed as FF . chrome are lighter on load and memory eating that's true . but chrome comparing with FF looks like skeleton ! I work with chrome few days but I found nothing special make me use it as my first web browser . last but not least FIREFOX ROCKS
klk
anyone tried the flock browser? if not - i have to tell you only one thing - check it.
If you like Flock then you should try Rockmelt, its in beta but its not hard to get. I is a little cleaner and still runs on chomium
i think this article is sponsored by google or opera
Chrome does not work on Ubuntu!! hows that!? and I think if you guys tried the FireFox 4 beta, it really caters to all the lame excuses listed above!! so behold browser users!!! FF 4 is on its way!
You don't have to restart Firefox 4 to install add-ons or extensions and it is super fast. I started with Firefox 1.2 but by Firefow 3.6 it had gotten really cludged up and slow. I changed to Chrome when it was in Beta and it's been my default browser every since. BUT, I picked up Firefox 4 Beta 11 and have been spending some time with it every day. Firefox 4 looks great, runs fast, is sandboxed (like Chrome) and is still the most customizable browser out there. I haven't changed from Chrome yet but I just might.
Yes but Firefox 4 breaks several extensions.
One of which is Tab History extension.
A must have !
bad article: 3 of the arguments are just opinions so no arguments at all and the other 2 seem to happen only on your computer at mine chrome keeps lagging and opera has so many strange buttons I just don't know what to do with it sometimes. only tried safari once, but it seemed very slow at this machine.
firefox and IE simply STINK !! all they do is COPYING chrome 's features, but they are 2 years out of phase... and they get credits for that !!:@ go chromium!!
Safari has improved? Didn't Safari get hacked within 5 minutes in the recent pwn2own contest? I believe only Firefox and Chrome went unhacked.
It's hard to say a browser is making progress when it's shown to be the least secure of all other browsers, wouldn't you agree?
Besides I've tested many browsers out ON MY OWN PC. And I can tell you Firefox's only competition is Chrome. Add-ons are important no matter how you want to believe it and so is security. And atm Firefox and Chrome were the only 2 not hacked and the only 2 with any decent add-ons.
I'd of chosen Chrome over Firefox if Chrome's add-ons were actually as good as Firefox's and you could move them around rather than have the go side by side. This is an issue because if you install 10 add-ons your browser looks like crap in Chrome. So right now Chrome is not made for the Add-on junkies.
@_@
From your all "opinion" , the conclusion is different people have different opinion !
Well, I'm using Google Chrome and Firefox. In my opinion, if your computer is the best, you can use Google Chrome and Firefox with no problem. Don't have to install every add-ons.
I quite agree that Internet Explorer is not enough stable.
Actually what I mentioned about the pwn2own contest where Safari got hacked within 5 minutes is fact it's not an opinion. I just found it funny because Apple fanboys/fangirls claim how much safer OSX and Safari are yet they've now both been proven to be less secure than Windows and IE.
Avast was one who proved OSX to be less secure and more buggy than Windows, claiming it's only safer cause very few people use it. So hackers focus on Windows instead.
Apple fanboys are a strange breed, you can put facts in front of them and if Jobs says otherwise offering no proof to the claim, the fanboys believe him over the facts.
@Matt Perkins - you're right that Safari was hacked quicker. No question about that. You're also right that OS X still needs more improvements to be as secure as Windows 7.
However, two important considerations: in real life, you are still much more likely to have your computer hacked or exploited if you run Windows. Secondly, pretty much any add-on in IE, Firefox or Chrome seriously reduces the security of these browsers, in Windows or in OS X.
That's why, like you, I'd always recommend that people browse the internet using an unadorned version of Chrome.
Incidentally, Apple is reaching out to hackers and security experts as part of the development process for Lion. I expect that ASLR and DEP will be properly implemented in 10.7.
The reason why Firefox Always crashes is cause you need to update your Flash player, For me Everyday My firefox crashes more than once, But Now My FF didn't Crash ever since i updated My Flash player, You just need to Update your Flash player to the Newest one, Yet if you got the Best computer FF will work Faster, But if you got a Bad computer well of Course it will Work Slow Sometimes, For me I think Firefox is Absolutely Good, IE Sucks Cause it Easily Froze And Always "Not Responding", Firefox May be Annoying sometimes but Yet its way better then IE, Even though Firefox's Design is Nooby but yet atleast it works well, For me FF is The God! When i was Still using IE, I Always get so Annoyed and Mad and Sometimes i just wanna Throw my Computer through the window, But since i Downloaded FF It felt waaaay Better then Before, Less Lag, Less Froze and BETTER, No offence to Chrome, Safari, IE or Opera But i Vote Firefox as the Best, I Believe Chrome's Good and Fast but I'll stay up with Firefox :)
I agree Tom about Windows in real time.
But again that is because Windows is more of a target to hackers than MACs are. The same can be said for why Opera is more safe and secure than Internet Explorer.
The more people use a product, the more likely it will be under attack by hackers. But if security is really the most important then Linux is better than both MACs and Windows.
And while I find Linux has improved, I still wouldn't use it for every day use. Like a friend told me Linux is best suited for hackers and MACs are more of a toy whereas Windows are for the rest of the world.
And this is true. In 99% of business, you are not allowed to use a MAC or Linux. You must use Windows. It's something everyone knows how to use and almost every company makes software for Windows.
And Firefox has many issues Vallerie, not just with Flash Player. The truth is Firefox's main crash problems are it's add-ons. You get add-ons conflicting with one another and the memory spikes and the browser freezes or crashes.
Even adding the Out of Process feature most crashes are from the same thing as before in Firefox and honestly unless the final Firefox 4 is an improvement on the RC build, I have to say that it appears Firefox is running in reverse.
Well everyone has their own experience and I'd imagine that firefox, opera, chrome or whatever can an will crash depending on your configuration, plugins etc. I will admit I use and very much have enjoyed Firefox. However I did and will try others. Chrome crashed on me and actually did some damage to my computer config but again, it was probably my config. I'm sure the new browsers are learning, competing and growing better and I'm open to trying things and yes, I Love Firefox. You can say whatever you want but if all these browsers are suddenly really starting to get "good" it is pretty obvious to me that it was Firefox that in the beginning led this charge by putting out a fine and superior piece of software. So those of you who use something else and it works great for you.. Fantastic! but give the devil his due. Firefox, ESPECIALLY in the early days set the standard and that standard prompted the competition to build superior products. I'm a web developer for 15+ years now and no matter where I end up browser wise. Firefox, I tip my hat and thank you for setting the standard and motivating the others to excellent in order to meet or beat you. You have my eternal respect.
I will comment and tell the disadvantages of others using the same topics you used to tell the disadvantages of firefox.
1. Memory Usage: What he said about memory usage is completely wrong. You just have to be wise about installing addons, and i have more than a hundred which take just about 150 to 200 mb. the browser itself is 40 mb. Chrome takes a lot of disk space in the application data folder in the user folder in the windows drive, thus making its access slow. You have to empty the cache just about everyday to keep your computer clean.
2. About Looks, I like the looks of firefox 4, they are much better than other.
3. If you complaint about outdated features, that's what extensions and addons are all about. I would recomment DownThemAll for anyone. It is a lightweight downloader with the best speeds on your internet connection (because it can maintain upto 15 links for the same file). Also, you don't have to install extensions every minute. Just take a few moments when you install a new version. And they are automatically updated (if updates are available) when the browser starts. What he said about outdated features is completely pointless.
4. I've never had any stability problem (even though my processor is 1Ghz and ram is 512 mb). Why should the other have?
5. What he said about giving others a chance is correct. Don't stick to the same browser. I recommend a combination of Opera (for extremely fast browsing), IDM (for the best download speeds) and Vuze (for the best speeds when downloading torrents). But still, they all support firefox which is the best.
(I figured he complained about these things because mozilla took too much time in releasing firefox 4.)
I agree with this. I never use fire fox and have probably used it for about a week in my whole life time and haven't seen anything appealing about it. I use to use Internet Explorer but my computer started to slow down a bit so now I use Google Chrome which is very efficient, looks nice and most importantly, fast.

Guys I think we proved our point. From what I have seen from Jon so far and this isn't meant as an insult ... Jon is an Apple fanboy. Every article I have read of his involving an Apple competitor has been a dis.
I have no problem showing support for your favorite products and companies but my thing is don't blindly following someone.
Hell I test out every new product and software I can afford. So when I make an opinion it's based on my own tests and actual experiences. I think everyone should do that before forming an opinion.
Hell I've tested about every freeware product known to man (or at least it seems that way).
And I do not blindly support any one company either. I go for the product I feel is best.
I use Mozilla Firefox Microsoft's Windows Apple's iPod Touch Google Android Phone (MotoCliq)
I do plan to switch to iPhone 5 because I find Android to be junk from personal experience. Too malware ridden. My iPod Touch 2G got more updates than my Motorola Cliq even though my Cliq is a full year newer. Also the apps are better on iOS, the developers support iOS more and those apps on both platforms ... the iOS version is almost always better. Plus you have developers leaving Android altogether to focus on iOS (see Meebo).
So yeah I have tried both iOS and Android. I have tried every browser around before settling for Firefox. I have used both Windows and Ubuntu (can't afford a MAC as well or I'd have one to at least try). Hell I will even leave Firefox if Chrome makes their browser cater the add-on power users who use at least 10 add-ons. Because ATM add-ons are the only thing I like about Firefox more than Chrome.
Wow, experience on two OSs. I guess that makes you the expert, right?
Been using Firefox as my default for years. Never had any of the mentioned problems. Firefox is outdated and just copying Chrome? lolz.... Who copied Firefox's plugin "Fastdial"? I don't even think Chrome was conceptualized yet when Fastdial came out. Chrome takes up less RAM, but better check your bandwidth too. All that speed doesn't come with it's sacrifices. Pre-downloading to your browser's cache everything from a site is not really something I personally like. There are others who use my internet connection in the local network, and Chrome definitely affects theirs. Chrome is ok when you're solo. but if you're sharing an internet connection? get ready to get slapped on the head. Firefox takes up too much RAM? with 1Gb pretty much standard, I don't understand why that would matter at all. Unless you;re using an antique Pc with 512mb or less RAM?

No I'm just saying I actually test 100s of different software products each year on my own PC. I'm not one who uses virtualization software or only test products I get paid to test.
See I'm one of those people who makes sure I end up the best at whatever I am doing. When I was a sales person, I made sure by the time I left I was by far the best salesperson they ever had.
When I decided to start testing software for friends and family. I decided I was gonna make sure I was the best at that too, even if others got paid to test things and I didn't.
Why? because people need to have the most information about products available to them. Regardless if it's food, software or technology.
I want everyone to know as much as they can so they have the best products for THEIR NEEDS. Which is why I hate fanboy reviews and articles. Because it is not giving information about other products unless it's to dis the other products.
So what someone is obsessed with Apple? Doesn't make it the best and doesn't mean just cause it's best for you that it's best for someone else and fanboys pretty much say what they like is best and nothing else can size up.
It's like having an argument over a browser. Not everyone likes Firefox or IE. I use Firefox because it's best for me. My one friend uses IE because it's best for him. For Jon Safari is best for him. But it doesn't mean any of those browsers is superior to another. It's all about preference.
When I do reviews I try and base it on product offerings. To me Chrome and Firefox are equal browsers because they offer the most overall features. Again that doesn't make them the best, it's just about offering the most. Like best bang for the buck so to speak.
