How to chat via Bluetooth

By James Thornton on 29 January, 2008

Bluetooth: the future of communication? As crazy as it sounds in this day and age, I'm running out of ways to communicate with people. I've outgrown instant messaging, got fed up with racking up bumper phone bills, and email is just far too passé for me. So, I've taken to harnessing the power of Bluetooth to chat with people now - it's instant, it's free, it's discreet and I love it. Besides being a handy way of silently conversing with pals at work or in the cinema, Bluetooth messaging is also great for making new friends in a library or chatting up someone in a crowded nightclub, because you can hook up with anyone who has a Bluetooth-enabled phone.

It's dead easy to do too. All you need is to switch your Bluetooth on, and install a chat program such as BuZZone, SYMPTChat, or Bluetooth Chat. I prefer BuZZone as I find it the most simple and fun to use of the three. To get started, you just define a username then scan the radio coverage of your Bluetooth transmitter for other users. Once you've hooked up with someone you can send and receive text messages as well as voice, insert emoticons, and exchange files.

At present these apps are a far cry from the all-singing, all-dancing desktop IM applications of today. However, Bluetooth chat is still a very practical way to talk and you can always inject a little more fun into your interactions by playing one of the many free wireless games such as Bluetooth Darts, 4Connect or ace soccer sim, The Match.

I see apps for phones, but what about laptops? I use my Apple a lot when I am out, but is there a way to chat over Bluetooth, which will work with both any other computers running it and any pda's and phones running one of their Blueooth chat applications?

Hey jc, have you tried Valhalla Chat? It's a free software that's compatible with Mac and PC laptops, PDAs and phones. It needs to be installed on both devices though (i.e. on your Apple and on the other persons mobile/laptop). Not tried it myself but heard that it's pretty neat. Let me know how you get on.

What about Palm OS? I want to use BT to chat using my centro (I actually own 2 and only have service on 1, would be handy to be able to chat between them sometimes).

FAO Redian & Vikas: All of these programs are very simple to set up and no coding or scripting languages are generally needed (i.e. they work through a graphical user interface). Because Bluetooth is a free networking system, you shouldn't pay for any chatting that you do and you can talk for as long as you like. Let me know if this answers your questions or if you have any further problems. Thanks!

We have created a iPhone/iPod touch (2nd gen on) Bluetooth chat app called Bleam which can send private and public messages and shares contacts and photos. It has worked with 12+ devices. We had to custom design our network ontop of the iPhone's Bluetooth PAN. Check it out at www.bleam.me.

Tried the Bluetooth Chat with my Nokias X3 & 6131 without luck: both scan and detect judging from the logo, but neither ever list each other. Same with every BT chat software I found.
