How to create a coloring book with Photoshop

By Elena Santos on 25 July, 2007

Now that kids are on holiday you need to come up with new ideas to keep them entertained during the summer. While video games may be a good option, it's also nice to go back to old pastimes like coloring books. And you don't even have to buy them: you can create them yourself with Photoshop!

1. First, select your image and create a copy of the background layer by hitting Ctrl+J

2. Then go to Filters > Sketch > Photocopy and adjust the Details and Darkness sliders. Try to keep the first one as low as possible, just to see the outlines you want to keep in your drawing.

3. Once done, press Ctrl+L and adjust the image's levels. The left arrow enables you to darken lines, while the white arrow will erase any traces left in the blank parts of the drawing.

4. Repeat the process with a bunch of pictures and you'll have a custom coloring book for your children!

Um..... This website is pretty USELESS!!!! It makes no sense to ANY of my friends and I don't know why you plan to make this! Make yourself USEFUL and make a site where people can actually MAKE a coloring book!!!

Gee Mary, the only thing your constructive criticism is missing is the constructive part. I actually found the technique in this blog entry helpful for what it is: a way to turn photos into coloring book style pages for my daughter to use. My suggestion to you and your apparently equally disturbed friends is to dress appropriately for the weather, go outside, take a great big deep breath, hold your hands at your side, palms faced down, and repeat to yourself "I am grateful to be living on this earth, able to breathe in and out, and I am grateful that people try to share their expertise here on the InterWebs without asking for a penny for their troubles. These are good people; I could learn a thing or two from them." You'll feel ever so much better, Mary.
