Update: Google has now added a Rename folder feature to Google Reader.
Yesterday evening I devoted some time to organizing my feeds in Google Reader. I wanted to add new subscriptions, remove some others and rename folders for a better workflow. And then I realized that Google Reader doesn't have an easy way to rename folders: no "Rename" button, no option in Reader's settings, nothing. I was about to start creating new folders and moving all my feeds to them, when I came up with this little trick to rename folders in Google Reader without having to turn all your feeds upside down.
1. Enter Google Reader's Settings and click on the Subscriptions tab.

2. Enter the folder name you want to edit in the filter text field on the right side.

3. You'll see a list with all the feeds saved in that folder. Now click on the "Select all" option on top of the list, and right after that create a new folder with the new name on any of those feeds, by clicking on the "Change folders" button and selecting "New folder".

4. Go to the "More actions" menu and select the new folder you just created under "Add tag". The tag will be applied to all the selected feeds.

5. Now, in that same menu, select the old folder name under "Remove tag" and voilà! All the selected feeds will be saved now under the new name.

6. The only thing left is going to the Tags tab and deleting the old folder.

Very helpful! Thanks!
Thanks for this excellent guidance. But why won't Google Reader provide a simple way to rename a folder?

i do the same think too, but its better for google to just come up with a simple rename button. I hope google is listening.
Thanks for the tip! It was really helpful! :)))
Thanks for this! With as 'smart' as Google software usually is, this particular situation with not being able to simple rename a folder SHOCKS me. And they still haven't fixed it! I can't believe it......
Thanks so much - I was looking everywhere for a rename button.
nice!!!
Thanks for this tutorial. But really silly that Google does not offer a simple way to rename folders.
I've thought of the same.. but before doing that, I decided to google, to find the answer, and I found myself here :)
Thanks for this :)
awesome, thanks so much
Hi - that was an awesome post and exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much. p.s. I manage a tech blog at "SocialMediaSEO.net" and would like to invite you to become a writer there. I'm trying to make this site into a "citizen journalism" type site for technology writers. If you'd be interested in creating a profile and writing at Social Media SEO, you can reply to my email at seoscale @ gmail . com or give me a call on my Google Voice # @ 706-363-0335 Thanks again for your great article!
This is really quite ridiculous. I think what Google is trying to do here is to wean the user off the "folder" concept. They want everything to be a label or a tag instead. This was first introduced in Gmail, and the concept is being pushed into other web apps. So if you don't like how something is tagged, you remove that tag and add a different one. That said, I still don't see why you couldn't rename tag (or, in the Googlified way of thinking about things, do a global replace of one tag by another).
[...] I ran into this the other day when I want to rename of the folders I have set up. I figured it was a simple enough process, just go to the ‘Tag Settings’ folder and rename it but this is not a something you can do. Instead you have to go through this process to easily rename a folder. [...]
Great! Thank you!
I can hardly find out any reason for Google not to put "rename" into its context menu. I initially thought Google was trying to push users to use multiple "tags" on every post instead of putting them into a single folder, so that Google can utilize real human brains to better classify posts for its blogsearch engine. But wait... there is no way to rename a tag, EITHER!!! To me it simply seems that none of those Googlers who are participating the Reader's project has ever used delicious.com. Google should learn the tag-managing idea from delicious in a hard way!

hot shit. congrats.
Thank you so much. The first time I did it, I did it in the long way...
Thanks. I am going to contact Google with the URL from your website.
Thanks for the info. Just what I was looking for.
Thanks for the tip! Strange that there is no "rename" feature.
