Twitter’s Vine became popular very quickly with Twitter’s social media influence. The concept behind Vine is to take six-second videos where you can post basically anything you want. While this can also include possibility not-safe-for-work videos, the majority of the Vine community has released interesting and creative videos. Since Vine is still relatively young, the majority of the posts are still direct videos of people showing something, but keep an eye on the community for more interesting videos.

Using the app is easy if you have ever posted to Twitter and only requires a few extra steps to record, edit, and upload to Twitter and the Vine community. While you can’t find friends through Facebook, your Twitter friends are ripe for spamming tons of videos of your food or cats.

So how do you use Vine?

Read on to find out.

Open the app and tap on the camera icon. Clicking on the camera icon will load the iOS device’s camera in video mode.

Whenever you tap and hold the screen, Vine will record. The app does a good job of starting/stopping video recording so you can actually make some basic stop-motion videos if you have the patience. The green bar will increase as you fill up the six second time limit and when it’s finished, the “Next” button will appear.

The next menu is the “Share” menu where you insert your description, add a location (powered through Foursquare), and decide which social networks to share. Once you’ve finished everything, tap “Done.”

Now you wait until Vine uploads the your post and it will be online.

Here’s a quick example of a simple video in Vine.

There are other options in Vine like finding other users through their usernames or #hashtags. Insert your favorite tags and you can look at different posts. The amount of hashtags aren’t as varied as Twitter’s so some of the more obscure hashtags probably won’t have any videos. Vine is only limited by your imagination. Six second may not feel like a long time, but with some creativity, you can upload some really great videos.
