“Intelligent” and “good looking” aren’t the first two words that spring to mind when you think about soccer players. However, these adjectives are two that resonated with me while playing PES 2012.
Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 is the first of the two big console and PC soccer titles to strut its stuff this season, following the release of the PES 2012 demo today. It remains to be seen whether FIFA 12 will win the battle in the hearts of soccer gaming fans again this year, but if this demo is anything to go by EA has to step up its game if this early PES 2012 demo is anything to go by.
The changes in PES 2012 are mainly based around tweaks to the game AI. These are designed to make an intelligent soccer experience, and for the most part it works.
It seems the tweaks favor attacking soccer rather than defending, making for more goal mouth action and higher-scoring matches. Improved attacking runs (dummy, diagonal and overlapping) by the AI give you more options when you’re going forward with the ball.
The match, between Ascot United and Wembley FC, would normally attract a crowd of around 90 supporters - yup, just 90! However, tomorrow’s fixture will be accessible to Facebook’s massive 700 million-strong user base.
The 90-minute live stream will be accessible via a Facebook application created by Budweiser, sponsors of the long-running English cup tournament. Head to the Budweiser UK Facebook Fan Page tomorrow at 7.30pm BST to watch the FA Cup match live (only if you’re over the legal drinking age!).
FIFA 12 for Android will only be available via the Xperia Play device when the game is launched later this year.
According to a Sony Ericsson press release, a timed exclusive deal with EA means that FIFA 12 will be released on the Xperia Play during the holiday season, while owners of other Android devices will have to endure a wait until February 21st, 2012.
All in all, it’s been a good news day for Sony Ericsson. Earlier on, Minecraft Pocket Edition was released exclusively for the Xperia Play (often dubbed the ‘Playstation Phone’). Users of the device can go grab the sandbox construction game from the Android Market now. Everyone else will have to make do with watching this video of Minecraft Pocket Edition for now.
A new version of the official YouTube app for Android has been released today, adding a new user interface for uploading videos to the site.
The redesigned uploading tool lets you edit the title, description and privacy of uploaded videos, and makes the process much quicker than in the previous version. The new version of the YouTube Android app also allows you to create, edit and delete playlists from your phone. Of course, customary bug fixes and performance tweaks have also been included.
Check out our review of YouTube for Android for a run-down on what the app is capable of.
A new version of popular iOS game, Cut the Rope, has been released today, adding fun new twists to the cord-cutting mayhem.
Cut the Rope: Experiments features the same problem-solving gameplay as the original, in which you need to strategically chop ropes to feed the hungry monster Om Nom with candy. This time out though, Om Nom is accompanied by a new character, the Professor, who gives you tips and commentates on your efforts. Do well and he’ll praise you, mess things up and he’ll make you a laughing stock!
Other additions include new puzzle elements such as rope shooters and suction cups. Plus, there’s a running challenge of having to piece photos together in order to help the Professor with his experiments. With an incredible 75 levels set across three worlds, there’s a whole lot of fun to be had with Cut the Rope: Experiments.
Read our full review of Cut the Rope: Experiments for more info on the game, which is set to chomp its way to the top of the App Store charts very soon.
Popular mobile game Words with Friends is coming to Facebook, developer Zynga has announced. The Scrabble-style word game allows you to take on your friends by creating words on a board, scoring points based on the value of the letters in that word.
The Facebook app will allow you to pit your wits against your buddies on Facebook. According to PC Mag, the Word with Friends Facebook app will include an option to trash talk your opponent on their wall.
To be among the first to find out when Words with Friends for Facebook is released, simply goto Facebook and Like thegame’s page. If you want to play Words with Friends now, it’s available for iPhone and Android.
The BBC has today launched a global iPlayer iPad app that allows users around the world to watch BBC television on their Apple tablet.
The app will offer a limited amount of content for free, plus users can pay €6.99 per month or €49.99 a year for access to the full range of content. This global version of the iPlayer includes some features not found in the UK-only version, including the ability to stream via 3G or WiFi, and support for downloading programs onto the iPad for offline viewing.
As with the UK version, the iPlayer app lets you peruse classic and current BBC programs by genre, popularity, new and A-Z. There’s also a parental lock feature for restricting content that’s not suitable for kids.
For the moment, BBC iPlayer Global is available in 11 countries: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Ireland, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. However, the United States, Canada and Australia should have access to the app before the end of the year.
You can now make video calls using Skype for Android, thanks to an update to the app today. Skype 2.0 allows you to video chat with other Skype users through an attractive user interface.
Unfortunately, the new video calling feature will only be supported on the Google Nexus S, HTC Desire, Sony Ericsson Xperia neo and Xperia pro devices.
Other changes in Skype 2.0 for Android include the ability to send SMS messages and some user experience improvements, designed to make the app easier to use.
Lazy mobile internet users will be rejoicing today after Opera added auto-complete and auto-suggest features to its Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers.
The new versions of Opera’s mobile apps now display suggestions as you type into the built-in search field in the browser. Opera Mini and Mobile will now intelligently complete web addresses as you type, learning which sites you visit and using this information so you don't have to type the whole address.
Auto-suggest has existed as a feature in many other mobile browsers for some time, including Firefox Mobile and Dolphin Browser HD. But it’s nice to see Opera finally add this useful feature to its popular apps.
Opera Mobile 11.1 is now available to download for Android and Symbian. You can download Opera Mini 6.1 for Java, Android, Symbian and BlackBerry devices. For details of the differences between Opera Mobile and Opera Mini, see the post we wrote on this a while back.
Angry Birds finally arrived on the Windows Phone 7 platform today, promising users of the Microsoft platform the same bird-lobbing fun many of us have been enjoying for a while.
By my count, Windows Phone 7 is the fifth major mobile platform supported by Angry Birds, following the iOS, Android, Symbian and WebOS releases. There are also PC, Mac and Web versions of the game.
In terms of the Windows Phone 7 conversion, Angry Birds plays pretty much the same as all the other versions, although there are significantly less levels than the iPhone and Android releases. However, the graphics look bright and vibrant on our Samsung Omnia 7 device, and the inclusion of Xbox Live support is a real boon for Microsoft gamers.
The next port of the original Angry Birds could be for the BlackBerry Playbook, unless the game’s developer Rovio decides enough is enough – and on current form this isn’t going to happen anytime time soon.
Android Market for the web has been updated today with a new User Reviews feature designed to make it easier to see what people think about a particular app.
The new system shows you how many people have given the application a given number of stars. This feature helps to give you a feel for the general consensus about an Android app, and brings the Market in line with the iTunes App Store and the Amazon App Store, both of which already feature this way of viewing ratings.
To access the new feature, simply visit the Android Market and select the app you wish to view. The new rating system appears above the user comments.
If you haven’t got bored of them yet, you might like to know that the Angry Birds are back for a brand new summer adventure. Angry Birds Seasons has been updated with a new Summer Pignic series of levels.
As is the norm with updates to the Angry Birds Seasons app, the new levels are themed around the season and this time things are hotting up. You’ll be jumping over sunflowers, knocking down sun hats and bashing into kites as the Angry Birds take to the skies again. A new level will be become available to play every day for the next 30 days.
Personally, I think it’s a shame the developer, Rovio, doesn’t tinker with the gameplay a bit more in these updates. It would be a good opportunity to add new life into a formula that’s getting a little tired. I’d be interested to know if you agree, and if so, what ideas do you have to improve Angry Birds?
Microsoft has updated its SkyDrive online storage solution as it prepares to take on Apple’s new iCloud service in the battle for the cloud.
The improvements to SkyDrive, announced on the Windows Blog, seem to be largely aimed at ramping up performance of the site and making it easier to work with. The redesigned service is based around HTML5, which improves the way video and slide shows are handled on SkyDrive.
Other changes to SkyDrive include SkyDrive groups, a new feature that lets you create groups in order to share files and photos with a select group of people. Ads have been removed from SkyDrive to aid user experience (either that or Microsoft is having trouble selling the space!), and Word and Excel files can now be opened on the desktop directly from SkyDrive.
Here’s a video from Omar Shahine, Group Program Manager, SkyDrive, that explains more about these and other interesting new changes to Microsoft’s cloud service.
Today is one of the biggest days in the tennis calendar as the Wimbledon Championships 2011 gets underway at the All England Club in London.
The tournament has always been notoriously difficult to follow for tennis fans. Aside from the fact there are so many events and games taking place at the same time, the big problem is that most of the action takes place during the day when everyone is at work, school or college.
The good news is that every year it gets easier to keep up with the latest action from Wimbledon, thanks to the increasing number of tennis apps and mobile services. Here are five of the best tools to stay on top of every shot from The Championships:
The official Wimbledon app is probably the best way to follow the tournament on your phone, although unfortunately it’s only available for iOS users. The neatly designed application brings you news, scores and fixtures from the event. It includes video highlights of each day’s play and there’s even a radio section where you can listen to live commentary of matches from Center Court and Court One.
Are you hooked on war games like Call of Duty or Counter Strike? Want to get your fix of combat action while you’re out and about with your phone? There are several awesome combat games for Android that allow you to play while you’re 'out in the field'.
Here’s a rundown of our five favorite Android war games:
The closest thing you’ll get to playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on a mobile device, Modern Combat 2 is a lavish first-person shooter that takes you to the heart of war in a variety of locations around the world.
The graphics and sound effects are highly polished and the controls are customizable, meaning you can set up a system that’s comfortable for you. The single-mode mode packs enough missions to keep you going for a while, but if you’re still hungry for battle after that, there’s a comprehensive online mode where you can take part in combat with others around the globe.
If you prefer wars that are fought in the skies, then you should download AirAttack HD right now. It’s a 3D vertical scrolling flying game where you must gun down planes as well as take out military vehicles and bases on the ground.
