All kinds of alien adventures
By Tony Aldridge Email of Tony Aldridge on 19 October, 2007
When I was younger I watched the film ET and it changed my life. I wanted to be an alien. So I dressed in a blanket and got my friend to ride me around on his BMX. For a whole summer. And even though we never flew I felt the same fear that the poor long-necked extraterrestrial must have suffered. Mainly because my blanket was pink and a boy called Andrew Johnstone kept throwing stones at me. Today, I still have the same enthusiasm for alien life, as well as a scar on my forehead from a well-aimed rock. If you too love boggle-eyed little spacemen with flaming fingers then check these out:
- Lost Planet Extreme Condition - Ice, snow, a strange planet and evil aliens
- Prey - Tommy, the mechanic, has been abducted with his girlfriend. Please save them
- Monster Fair - Aliens on earth are running a circus. Seriously
- Cybernoid 2 - A Spectrum and Commodore spaceship classic
- B-Intruders - A free up-to-date game of Space Invaders
- Scavenger - Absolute carnage: A human, a droid and a whole load of weapons
- Space Taxi 2 - Drive aliens, businessmen and robots in a flying car
- Laser Dolphin (Mac and Windows) - Only Laser Dolphin can save the Prime Minister
- OttoMatic (Mac) - A giant brain has landed on Earth. Outwit him/her/it
- Johnny Rumble (Java) - Rumble's cool, he ain't no fool, he kills aliens before school. Yo

Guide snake to the fruit and out of the maze
By Tony Aldridge Email of Tony Aldridge on 18 October, 2007
'Snake Deluxe' is based on the classic snake or worm game (however you played it) that we all know and love. The objective is almost the same. You try to eat fruit by controlling the snake's direction. Below the game's screen you will see all the meters (score, time etc.) That's where you see how much fruit is left to eat. You can turn the snake by tapping on the screen or by the hard keys with five way navigation. There are some obstacles at every level, so be careful not to crash into them.

Who's the king of the castle?
By Tony Aldridge Email of Tony Aldridge on 17 October, 2007
Like any self-respecting Englishman, I live in a castle with a moat to make sure peasants and the poor stay in the mud. Now I know even in these days I'm one of the lucky few along with Elton and Queenie (and they are two different people) but thanks to technology there's no shortage of fun for plebs. Just look at all these castle applications:
- Castle Constructor - House traitors in your own tower
- Knight Online - Medieval multiplayer madness
- Super Mario XP - It's Mario meets Castlevania, the two best things about Nintendo
- Defender of the Crown - Great war strategy, the way they used to do it
- Lord of The Rings - There's an amazing battle in Middle Earth
- Stronghold - Build and defend your own castle

Handy Calendar full of features
By Tony Aldridge Email of Tony Aldridge on 17 October, 2007
There are, of course, lots of calendars, diaries, organisers and planners available for mobile phones. They all do similar things when you look at the basics but where lots of them struggle is in their lack of options. Not so with Handy Calendar. Because where Handy Calendar thrives is in its functionality and features that you really do need. The main display is a calendar but you can change this, as with Outlook, to break it down into a month, a week or a single day view.

The strange world of PC clocks
By Tony Aldridge Email of Tony Aldridge on 15 October, 2007
Clocks and computers have been as good a combination down the ages as Morecambe and Wise, Salt 'n' Pepper (condiment and pop group), Rhubarb and Custard (confectionery and cartoon) and God and the Devil. I'd always been reasonably happy with the little digital display counting away in the bottom right-hand of my screen. Until I realised what choice I had. It's clocking unbeclockable:
- Binary Clock - Really cool binary time display.
- Amazing Clock - Different time zones, in fruits!
- Picture TimeClock - Photo clock-in to monitor employees. Boooooo. Big Brother.
- PixelBreaker PolarClock - The time in colourful concentric circles. Weird. In a good way.
- ZoneTick World Time Zone Clock - One for the traders. Never sleep, in any time zone.
- Premium Clock - Digital and analogue. Nice simple displays but a little boring for me.
- Weather Clock - The time and the temperature. Bonus!
- Parallaxis Cuckoo Clock - Alarms, schedules, oh, and a cuckoo.
- Coral Clock - A deep-sea diver swimming with fish, and a clock. Handy.
- Naughty Clock Screensaver - Cute cartoons for younger children.

Arcade action in this remake of Arkanoid
By Tony Aldridge Email of Tony Aldridge on 11 October, 2007
This is a remake of an arcade classic and it has all the speed, explosions, sound effects and music of the original. In fact there's so much happening at once on the screen that you might start screaming as your head spins from your shoulders. The objective is simple. It's a classic 'Space Invaders' style shooter that sees you man a spacecraft with which you need to blast through layers of coloured blocks.

Create and collect comics on your computer
By Tony Aldridge Email of Tony Aldridge on 11 October, 2007
Ever since my Desperate Dan Cow Pie Eater badge arrived in the post in a black plastic wallet when I was about nine I have been an avid fan of the comic book. OK, so I was a Dandy when it was cool to be a Beano but then Dandy always came with a Wham bar and Korky the Cat. And my brother got The Beano. Still I guess you're not interested in any of this if you're not from the UK. And even if you are chances are you're getting a bit bored. I expect you're one of those Manga people. Or a Marvel. In fact I bet you've never even tried Space Dust. Whatever your taste, there are plenty of great apps to read and create your very own comics.
- Comic Life - Use photos to turn your life into a comic book
- Comic Book Creator - Excellent comic creator: drag in images, add effects
- ComicRack - Read real comic books on your PC
- ComicBase - For serious comic collectors - manage thousands of editions
- ComicReader - Huge collection of titles like Dilbert and the brilliant Calvin and Hobbes
- Manga Studio - Hee-hah whoa-yah, create incredible flying Manga cartoons
- Daily Garfield Reader - Unlimited doses of the fat, lasagne-loving cat, and Odie!
- iComic (Mac) - Download your fave comics off the web, read them offline
- Comic Book Lover (Mac) - View, read, organize and add to your immense collection

Free Robo from prison
By Tony Aldridge Email of Tony Aldridge on 11 October, 2007
Personally, I love robots and I hate to see them imprisoned, so when I heard about this game I was understandably quite excited. The objective here is to help Robo the robot escape from one of the most secure jails on the planet (which planet, I'm not sure). It's not very easy and there are all sorts of obstacles blocking his escape that you'll need to blast with your laser.

Google Maps Street View zooms on six new cities
By Tony Aldridge Email of Tony Aldridge on 10 October, 2007
Google Maps has expanded its Street View service to six more American cities - Chicago, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland and Tucson. If you're not up-to-speed with Google Maps Street View yet the software allows you to drag a little man onto any blue-outlined road and zoom in to see the houses, shops, cars and people. Using your mouse, you can scroll around the area as if you were there. However, it's not without controversy. There have been obvious concerns mounted over the intrusion of people's privacy (apparently members of the public have been spotted urinating and getting arrested, it's unclear if this is the same person) as well as arguments that it could support future terrorist attacks. Whatever your view, these Google technologies are incredible and worth using.

Classic UNO fun for mobiles
By Tony Aldridge Email of Tony Aldridge on 9 October, 2007
UNO Classic 2007 is a fun version of the popular card game for mobile phones. There's one simple objective - get rid of all your cards and shout out UNO! If you don't know how to play it's fairly simple. We used to play a slightly different version with a rude word when I was younger. You lay down cards, change the direction of the game, skip to the next player and change the selection of the cards being placed down.

Make sure you get the pretty one with SpeedDate
By Tony Aldridge Email of Tony Aldridge on 9 October, 2007
There aren't many days I wake up and wish I was an American. Only kidding guys, but really I never have. Until just now. When I saw what you lot are up to. Because while I've been stuck at my computer sending messages to weird women who can't spell it seems that you've been chatting to each other in three minute webcam dates. And if you haven't then you really should have been.
SpeedDate offers 'real' dating via your computer. Meaning when the face of your partner lifts the bile from your stomach you don't even have to buy them a drink. Just close your eyes,
talk and wait for the three minutes to run out. Then the date is over, the screen goes black and you choose if you want to 'connect again' to talk further. Some demos on here show guys really messing-up by talking about failed romances and how they don't like to cook. Idiots. Girls don't really like honesty. It seems now is the time for these webcam dating services with a number of competitors like WooMe trying to seize the market. However they are all based in America. To get more users SpeedDate is holding events in San Fransisco, but that means actually meeting people and who wants to do that?!
