Play tennis on your Pocket PCPocket PC: Generally speaking, tennis sims for mobile devices are pretty lame. Not so in VT Pocket Tennis though, which proves to be one the most enjoyable games of its kind on the Pocket PC. It has a wonderfully realistic feel to it, with well-rendered 3D players, authentic shadow effects and motion blur.

What will Apple announce at WWDC in June?

By Jonathan Riggall on 6 May, 2009

What are we expecting from the Worldwide Developers Conference in June? Lots of people are predicting that Palm will launch their much hyped Pre handset on June 7th, just a day before the Apple conference begins. Maybe Palm are hoping to overshadow any Apple announcements, but that looks dangerous to me, as Apple are likely to have some cool stuff up their sleeves.

Here at OnSoftware we've been wondering out loud what might happen, so starting with the most likely things, here we go:

1: Snow Leopard. Surely there'll be an exhibition of the next version of OSX, 10.6, which sounds like it will build on what is already my favourite operating system. The most interesting thing about it for me is that it will have an overall smaller hard drive and RAM footprint (like Windows 7) - efficiency is always a good thing. We know that Windows 7 is lighter so it can work on netbooks.... Probability: 100%

2: The next surest thing, and it's a pretty sure thing too, is an announcement of a third generation iPhone. What's it going to be like? I wouldn't expect much of a visual difference (it won't be available in pink any time soon), but should do the things people think it should already do, like video capture or maybe a compass (like the HTC Magic). Perhaps you'll be able to alter the backlight time too? Reading that back, maybe Palm are right to gamble, or maybe Apple have something really cool for the next gen iPhone? Probability: 90%

2.5:  Rumours abound that working with Verizon, there might be an iPhone lite in the works, and some have claimed to have actually seen the device. It's worth remembering that Apple went as far as creating fake prototypes to keep people from knowing the truth about the original iPhone... I think an iPhone lite is a pretty underwhelming concept too. Probability: 30%

3: Mystery item! With all the stories about Apple ordering 10 inch touchscreens, Snow Leopard being easier on resources and the success of netbooks in general, there are many predicting Apple will announce something between a Macbook and iPhone. Tim Cook, Apple's COO recently said that netbooks "suck", but that could be a precursor to "but ours are cool". Bets are divided between some kind of netbook or keyboard free tablet device. The 10 inch touchscreen tablet sounds like a sweet idea - a device for browsing and watching media. However, in my head that looks like a big iPhone, which shows a lack of imagination on my part! Probability: 50%

We've seen numerous alleged photos of Apple netbooks, or Macbook minis, but none of them look convincing (or good!)!

*thanks to our resident Apple insider Tom for the secret Apple iPhonebook image!

How to: Make your own Series 60 theme

By James Thornton on 29 April, 2009

We've all met those people who think they're pretty cool just because they've installed a funny ringtone, a sexy background wallpaper, or a stupid animation on their mobile. More often than not they will have paid a small fortune to download it from a premium rate service, too. However, the smartest of smartphone users turn to theme-creation software to customize their phones for free.

Nokia's Series 60 Theme Studio is perhaps the most powerful product of this kind. It's free, and with a bit of creativity, you can produce much better designs than those crappy themes you see advertised on TV and in the back of magazines. Although the software is very powerful, it does have a reputation for being a bit of a beast to use. I've taken the opportunity to provide a quick guide to using Series 60 Theme Studio. It's by no means a comprehensive walkthrough (that would take you about three months to read) but it should help you get started and give you a grounding in this somewhat daunting application.

1. Start by downloading Series 60 Theme Studio Carbide. Once installed, run the program and select a folder to save your work to, when prompted. Click OK then select the Create Theme option from the Welcome screen.

Create Theme

2. Give your theme a name in the New Theme menu and make sure the default S60 Theme template is selected. Now to change the background wallpaper. It's best if the image you use is already sized to the dimensions of 360 x 640 px. The image I used here came from VectorStock (it was free). To apply the image as a background, click the Idle preview window in the Gallery. Highlight the image in the main window then look for the Image icon in the Layers window. Right-click on this and choose Select File. Browse to the folder containing the image, select the one you want to use and hit OK. In the Background option inside the Resources panel, highlight Active Background and repeat the above procedure.

Download Auslogics Registry CleanerWindows: Is your computer too slow or unstable? The reason may be in the Windows Registry, which is usually bloated with errors, broken references, invalid entries and other issues after an intensive computer usage period. With Auslogics Registry Cleaner you can easily scan the Registry and get rid of all those errors in a couple of clicks, saving a backup copy just in case

Download The Panorama FactoryWindows: Panoramic photos are easier to create than you think, especially if you use The Panorama Factory. With this tool creating panoramas is a piece of cake: select your source images, adjust a few settings, stitch them together and you're done. The program can also generate the necessary HTML code in case you want to showcase your creations.

Kill those viruses deadSymbian UIQ: We've had bird flu, mad cow disease and elephantitis, and now another seemingly cute creature is set to bring terror and panic to the planet - the Ameobax. This mutant germ has escaped from a scientific lab and is spreading its way across Earth in the form of a series of cuddly blobs with big eyes. Don't worry it's not real, apart from in this excellent mobile game.

ooVoo logoMac: Being able to see the person you are communicating with makes such a difference to the quality of your conversation and reduces the feeling of distance of those that are far apart. The problem is that most IM clients only allow one video at a time. ooVoo however allows you to see up to six friends, family or colleagues at the same time, in very high video quality and all for free.

Curling Challenge is an absorbing simulation of the winter sport, for one or two players. The object of curling is to score points by rolling rocks down the ice, getting them as close to the center of the scoring circle as you can.

Windows: Evri Toolbar brings the semantic web to your browser. What's that? Well, you get much more intelligent search results, multimedia content, related terms and much more. It's still only in beta, but it looks fantastic and makes a Google search seem very last year. It's especially good at things like bands and names of people, although it's a bit weak if you search for "table"!

Control iTunes remotelyiPhone: Ever wished you could tap into your iTunes library on your computer using your iPhone? Well, Remote allows you to do just that - and more! Sumo Paint, an amazing online editor

By Elena Santos on 12 March, 2009

I'm particularly fond of image editors and I've tested many of them, including all those online editors that have become so trendy in the last few months. But I must admit I've never seen such an incredible online image editor as Sumo Paint.

Sumo Paint

This amazing tool opens up in your web browser and displays a complete Flash interface that will look amazingly similar to Photoshop. This reduces the learning curve to almost zero to all those who are already familiar with Photoshop, but if this is not your case, don't worry: you'll get the knack of it in almost no time.

Sumo Paint includes a full featured tool menu with pretty much anything you need to start painting from scratch. Brushes and pencils are designed to draw just like the actual tool, trying to be as realistic as possible. You can customize colors, fiddle with opacity and flow percentages and of course, work in different layers.

Sumo Paint

When it's time for photo editing, Sumo Paint doesn't fall short of expectations either. The program lets you load images from your local drive, an Internet URL or your Sumo account and apply a dozen filters and effects or adjust color and brightness values to it in a couple of clicks. Should something go wrong, simply press Ctrl+Z and it'll be undone – just like any desktop tool!

Sumo Paint

Regarding those Sumo accounts I just mentioned, don't get me wrong here: you don't need to register or sign up for anything to use Sumo Paint. It's totally free. The Sumo account is only a way to enter the Sumo community, a group of Sumo Paint users that have gathered around this great online editor and share their photos and drawings online. Having a Sumo account therefore lets you upload your own creations to the Sumo site and also comment on what other people have uploaded.

I could only find one drawback to Sumo Paint: the program doesn't include a proper Help section yet. Photoshop users don't need it, but other people would find it quite handy. In all, Sumo Paint is an excellent online photo editor that's really worth a try.
