Day six of our OnSoftware advent calendar. See if you can guess which new release from this year that Elena is talking about...
With xxx you can create screencasts and video tutorials in a friendly working environment, including sound, transitions, video effects and a customized intro menu. Plus the latest version of the recording suite takes advantage of the new high-definition video formats to produce high-quality material for the Web - Elena
If you've got yourself a spanking new Magic Mouse for your Mac, you may be more than just a little bit disappointed with some of its functionality.Fortunately, a mini-cottage industry of Magic Mouse software is already developing to fill the gap left by Apple. There still isn't much out there at the moment but here are a few essential software downloads to get the best out of your Magic Mouse. Note that all of these work for Trackpads too:
This is completely free to use and amazingly simple. BetterTouchTool is the work of a single German developer who has produced an easy way to customize Mighty Mouse actions. These include the all important pinch in/out (zoom), single finger taps and even three finger swipes. Note that it only works with Snow Leopard.
A more polished Mighty Mouse enhancer software which adds three extra buttons, namely, 'pinch', 'bloat', and 'tap to click' gestures and allows you to customize almost every aspect of your Mighty Mouse. You can even put your Magic Mouse to sleep using it. The main interface is very easy to use, allowing you to configure which type of clicks do what such as configuring a middle-click for Exposé or a fourth click to open Spotlight etc. If you get stuck, a handy wizard takes you through the configuration process by telling you where to place your hands on the Magic Mouse. The disadvantage is that it's not free (although only costs a modest $2.50).
Welcome to day three of the OnSoftware advent calendar. Click on the window to find out which PC application Niamh is raving about.
This program is intended to help you draw your own characters and create manga strips or stories. To that end, it has a huge selection of sketching, drawing and character tools that will allow you to put the characters in your head on the screen in front of you - Niamh
Today is the first day of advent, which means we can now officially start singing carols, stealing kisses under mistletoe, and panicking about what the heck we're going to buy everyone. Today is also the first day of the inaugural OnSoftware advent calendar.
This year we decided to round up our favorite software of the year in a festive way. Each of our editors will be revealing their choice apps and games of '09 over the coming 24 days. Every day there will be different Windows, Mac or mobile program lurking behind the 'window', along with a quote from our original review. See if you can guess what the application is before clicking the picture to reveal it. Have fun, and Merry Christmas!
This is one of those players that goes unnoticed but proves to be an excellent tool when you take the time to give it a try. This compact, easy-to-use video player lets you enjoy video files and movies in a wide variety of formats. What's more, you won't have problems with codecs because it already includes them - Elena
iPhone: If you reckon you can do a better job than Dr. Dre at making 50 Cent sound good then prove it by installing this app on your iPhone. The snappily-named 50 Cent "Baby By Me" Sound Lab gives you the chance to remix the rapper's hit single. You don't need to be an experienced music technician, either. The mixing desk consists of a series of icons that represent different tracks (e.g. drums, vocals, bass, etc.).
Windows: Songbird is an open-source music player and organizer with which you can manage, play and discover music. It's free, cross-platform, highly customizable thanks to a wide variety of plug-ins and can be improved and extended by the contribution of its user community. It also works like a web browser, and will collect any MP3s that you find on pages automatically.
Mac: Don't be fooled by the name - Alarm Clock Pro is much more than just a flashy way of getting you out of bed on time. Now updated to version 9.2.2, Alarm Clock Pro is a fully functional organizer and scheduler that aims to ensure you never miss an important date again. As a wake-up alarm, it allows you to configure the tone as anything from an Internet radio station to an MP3 and even a movie or daily task.
If you fancy having a bit of fun next time you use Skype then why not try out a voice-changing app? You'll be able to do all sorts of cool things, from prank-calling your pals as Darth Vader to faking a sore throat in order to get a day off work. There are a number of software tools around that can change your voice in Skype, and none of them are particularly difficult to use.
Skype Voice Changer is a free app that does exactly what its name suggests. Install the application on your PC, open up Skype and agree to the permission request. You'll then be presented with an effects panel that lets you alter your voice. There are a range of presets and you can tweak each of them using the sliders to change various aspects of the sound.
A more comprehensive and easier to use solution is MorphVOX Pro. The program has some really cool preset voices, including a demon, robot, woman, kid and even a dog! You can also apply background noises to your voice as you're talking, such as a shopping mall or a traffic jam (perfect for a call to your boss saying you'll be late for work). Another great thing about MorphVOX Pro is the 'Voice effects' section, where you can apply various filters to your dulcet tones, including nasal, growl, underwater and monotone. All of the presets can be customized using the 'Tweak Voice' control panel. The downside of MorphVOX Pro is that it costs $39.95, although you can try the program free for 30 days.
If you really want state-of-the-art then check out AV Voice Changer. This app is loaded with a multitude of options that let you really fine-tune your fake voice. There are lots of preset voices to make you sound young, old, sexy, patronizing, joyful or sarcastic. The program includes a 'Parady Mixer', which lets you sample celebrities voices before calling people up and pranking them. The tinkering you can do with AV Voice Changer is more akin to a professional audio production app, including a formant morpher (to alter acoustic resonance), voice equalizer and noise reduction settings. The only trouble with AV Voice Changer is the trial is pretty limited, and the program is more expensive than MorphVOX Pro.
If you really want an idea of the fun you can have with voice changers, then you must watch this video of a guy using MorphVOX Pro with some hilarious consequences.
iPhone: If your brain feels a little sluggish from time-to-time perhaps it's time to install a logic puzzle on your mobile. ReMovem puts the brain cells of iPhone and iPod users to the test in an addictive logic game. The free game starts with a screen filled with colored balls, which you need to eliminate by making chains of same-colored balls.
Windows: Panoramic images look awesome and are easier to create than you think, especially if you count on tools like Hugin. With Hugin you can generate your own panoramas in a few steps, and though the program might be a bit complex for beginners, it's very well documented and includes all sorts of tutorials and guides.
Mac: Have you ever needed to add subtitles to a QuickTime movie but haven't found the right tool? If so, thenMovCaptioner can help. The main problem with doing this kind of thing is that audio and images move too quickly for you to keep up with. MovCaptioner tries to help by repeating a segment of a video until you've got the subtitles right.
Windows: If you need more space but can't be bothered to buy another external hard drive, try online storage. WithSkyDrive Explorer you'll be able to access your Live SkyDrive free storage from Windows Explorer, just as it it was one more local drive on your computer. All you need is a Windows Live ID, and 25 GB of online free space will be yours for free!
iPhone: If you're a interested in space exploration, this NASA app for iPhone is a must. This app basically allows you to follow all of NASA's missions. The main screen lists the missions you can follow, and touching any of them takes you to a description of the mission with a counter for the time elapsed since the mission started.
Mac: Renaming files can be an absolute nightmare if you're faced with a batch of wrongly-named ones, or recovered files which have had their IDs corrupted. A Better Finder Rename (now updated to version 8.37) is a comprehensive file renaming solution for Mac and can rename huge numbers of files in seconds. A Better Finder Rename allows you to do just about everything you need to rename files.
Windows: do you need help handling your downloads? Then jDownloader Portable is made for you. This powerful download manager doesn't require installation and makes the whole process of downloading from file sharing websites much easier and faster. No more pop-up windows, waiting times and hidden download links. Let jDownloader Portable will take care of it!
iPhone: The default battery indicator on the iPhone looks pretty, but it doesn't really give you much information other than a general idea of how much juice you have left. About Battery delivers a more powerful and advanced way of monitoring battery life on your iPhone. Rather than just give you an overview of the remaining power, the program breaks it down into calculations of the remaining time you have left for certain tasks.
Mac: There are basically two options to run Windows on a Mac - using Boot Camp which involves installing Windows on a separate partition and rebooting it in Windows or, running Windows in a virtual environment such as the one that Parallels Desktop provides. Parallels 5 presents more than 70 new features which allow users to define how much or little Windows they want to see, a new Crystal view mode.
One of the only major disadvantages of switching to Mac is that there are far fewer games available for OS X than Windows. For example, Steam is a hugely popular gaming application on Windows which allows users to download and update an array of great games from developers Valve - the makers of Half Life.
Sadly it's not available on Macs and usually, the only way to use it on a Mac is to install a virtual environment such as Parallels, VMware or boot in Windows using Bootcamp.
However, the former is expensive and usually results in poor game performance and of course, both methods require purchasing Windows. It's far better - and cheaper - to run games natively in OS X if possible. But how?
That's where CrossOver Games comes-in. CrossOver Games is based on what's known as the "Wine" platform which means it allows you to play Windows games on Mac (or Linux) computers without purchasing a copy of Windows. Best of all, it's only around $40 which is a snip compared to buying a virtual environment or Windows. CrossOver Games comes from the same makers of CrossOver which allows you to run many Windows applications on your Mac in a virtual environment. The advantage of CrossOver Games however is that it squeezes every last drop out of the Wine platform in order to handle the demands of games.
The app is designed for those with little technical knowledge and holds your hand throughout the setup process. You should be up and running within a matter of minutes. It won't work for all games but the good news is that all the major ones - such as World of Warcraft, Half Life and the Steam platform, work perfectly and have been awarded "platinum" status for their stability on the Wine platform. You can find a full list of the specific games that work within Steam (most of which have been awarded at least silver status) here.
If you've been disappointed by gaming using a virtual environment or with Boot Camp and only miss Windows for gaming, CrossOver Games is a great solution.
Windows: Do you need to convert any audio or video file? Oxelon Media Converter is the perfect tool for the task. This simple app can convert multiple media files simultaneously, and it works surprisingly fast! Oxelon Media Converter supports dozens of formats and is perfectly embedded with Windows Explorer, which enables you to convert files with one click.
iPhone: Halloween is upon us once again, but if you haven't got the money or the inclination to go trick or treating this year then check out Spooky Photo Free. This app allows you to make scary scenes out of your photographs. For example, you could put a zombie into a wedding picture, make bats appear in the sky above your house, or add a menacing pumpkin head onto an image of your dog.
Mac: Keychain on Mac does a pretty good job of managing passwords but once you've tried 1Password you'll probably never look back. If you're tired of making up passwords to access sites or worried that your passwords are not secure enough, it really is invaluable. 1Password creates strong, unique passwords for you, then remembers and restores them all within your web browser.
One of the frustrating things about having multiple Gmail accounts is managing them all at the same time. Until recently, I'd been using the Firefox Gmail Manager Plugin but it's an absolute pain because having two different Gmail accounts open in separate tabs automatically logs you out of both accounts after a few seconds. This is even more annoying if you've got other Google apps open at the same time because it logs you out of those too. The best answer I've found to this problem is Mailplane.
Mailplane was actually created back in the days when you needed access to your Gmail account from your desktop but IMAP support wasn't yet available. Nowadays you can consult Gmail from any mail client like Mail.app or Thunderbird but unlike Mailplane, none of them are made specifically for the use of Gmail or make managing multiple accounts so easy.
Like a mail client, Mailplane works outside of your browser. Along the top of the interface, you have buttons for replying, sending, printing, forwarding etc much like any other mail client. There are also buttons for quickly adding photos (with special integration for iPhoto) and managing downloaded items. Alternatively, you can drag and drop attachments such as photos and documents onto mail while you're composing it which is another very nice feature of Mailplane. A similar feature also works for taking screenshots and sending them instantly via Gmail.
You can add as many accounts as you want using the Accounts button. When new mail arrives, a Mailplane icon in your Menu bar will indicate how many are waiting to be read and each account features a number next to it indicating the amount of mail in that particular inbox. I like the fact that by clicking on the Menu bar icon, a drop down menu shows you the subject heading of unread mail in each inbox. The big advantage I've found though is that managing multiple inboxes with Mailplane is so much easier than doing it in your browser.
Although you can't have more than one Gmail inbox at the same time, Mailplane makes switching between them much quicker and less hassle that in Firefox. In future, it would be nice to see a simultaneous open inboxes feature in the app but until then, it's the best way of managing multiple Gmail inboxes I've found.
Windows: The quintessential optimization suite for Windows is back! The all-new TuneUp Utilities 2010 has a new redesigned interface and a bunch of new features and improvements that make it even better: Turbo mode, Live optimization, TuneUp desktop gadget, Optimization report and support for Windows 7 in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
iPhone: Aside from a jellyfish attack or a sudden downpour, another guaranteed thing to a ruin a day at the beach is an attack by the entire Japanese Imperial Navy. Blood Beach puts you in the unenviable position of a soldier who must take down the entire Japanese WWII fleet alone. You're holed up on a thin stretch of beach in the Solomon Islands and must take down the waves of planes, boats and foot soldiers landing on the beach.
Mac: Renaming huge numbers of files can be a real pain, especially when you only need to make a few minor changes. Renamer (formerly known as Renamer4Mac) makes it easy to rename a huge number of files at once, in several different ways. One possibility is to search and replace certain components or words, much like using a word processor. Alternatively, you can simply insert or copy over a chunk of text to multiple files.
After waiting all day yesterday with no joy, finally this morning the Left 4 Dead 2 demo is available to download and play! The first game offered some of the best cooperative multiplayer gaming around, and on first impressions, that certainly hasn't changed.
This demo lets you play one campaign, entitled "The Parish" either in one player mode (with three AI companions), or online with four players fighting to survive together. There's plenty of high speed frights and thrills in both, but playing with bots just isn't the same. Multiplayer games are much more dynamic, and there's more emotional involvement - whether it's anger at a selfish player, or pleasant surprise when people are working together!
It looks like Left 4 Dead 2 is cementing its supremacy over the aged, lumbering Resident Evil series - these zombies are varied, fast moving and extremely vicious. There's really nothing like the moment when a horde of zombies is rushing towards you: it's one of the most visceral, adrenalin pumping creations in gaming history.
To play you'll need the Steam client, and from there you can download the demo - but be warned, it's not for the faint hearted.
TuneUp Utilities is one of those programs that improves with every new release. We were particularly eager for its latest version, TuneUp Utilities 2010, because it offers full support for Microsoft's brand new Windows 7 in both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions. But this isn't the only new feature in this excellent program. Let's take a look at all the new functions and improvements we can find in TuneUp Utilities 2010.
Redesigned Interface
The Start Center in TuneUp 2010 has been redesigned. A quick glance is enough to learn about the system's current status and find out if there's any problem. A cleaner, more minimalist style makes the program more comfortable and easier to use.
Turbo Mode
When you're playing your favorite game, you need your computer to offer the highest performance possible. Turbo Mode can help you with that, disabling all superfluous Windows services and background applications with a single click.
