Top 10 defrag tools

By Nick Mead on 3 October, 2007

Defrag logoIs your PC running slow? Are some of your programs taking longer and longer to open? Does your hard drive sound like it's going to grind to a halt any minute? Chances are that you need to defragment your hard drive. Windows comes bundled with it's own defrag tool but if you've ever used it, you'll know that it's painfully slow and lacks any kind of useful advanced features. Here's my top ten:

  • SpeeDefrag - Shuts down your PC and defrags with minimum running processes
  • JkDefrag - Defrags external devices such as floppies and USB sticks
  • PageDefrag - Shows how fragmented your paging files and Registry files are
  • VoptXP - Schedule defrags at specific times and dates
  • UltraDefrag - Open source defragger with 4 different defrag types
  • mst Defrag - Very comprehensive defragger packed with advanced features

I recently purchased a utility to save my dying disk from the deadly disease of fragmentation, it would have taken me hours with the built in. Quite expected as its been 2 years since i did any drive cleaning at all! Learnt the hard way, its sensible to have minimum free space at all times and keep fragmentation under control.

How many of these are fully automatic i.e. intelligent defraggers? Automatic defraggers are great because they manage the whole defrag process without hassling the user. No need to run defrag the old fashioned way -manually or scheduled, no need to analyze the drive periodically, no need to wait for the defrag(s) to be completed. An auto defragmenter runs in the background, monitors fragmentation and defrags automatically when required when it finds sufficient free resources without affecting other applications. What could be more simpler, effective and efficient?
